The Life of St. Anthony of Padua

Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal around 1195 by Martin Vincente de Bulhao and Teresa Pais Taveira who was very rich as at that time. So they could afford a good lifestyle for him, and wanted him to Noble where commoners will have to ascend to his nobility but he refused and forged his life through another path. In most of his pictures or status, he’s seen carrying baby Jesus in his arm, a lily, a book, or all three.

He’s often regarded as the patron saint of the poor, of sailors and fishermen, of priests and travelers, lost things, a protector and guardian of the mails, and wonder-worker.

Saint Anthony was baptized when he was still an infant and given the Fernando as his baptismal name. At age 15, he join the religious order of Saint Augustine, where he studied and researched about the ways of God. But life in the monastery is not always peaceful for a young man at that time who wish to focus on studies and prayers, because his friends would often visit trying to engage him into political discussions. Because of this, he requested to be transferred to Coimbra (cornbrow) after 2 years. At Coimbra, he spent 9 years while studying Augustinian theology that he would later combine with Franciscan vision. History has it that he was later ordained a priest.

During his stay with Franciscan, which he previously visioned to continue his teachings and preaching didn’t last due to illness. He suffered the poor health for many years, and later diagnosed with dropsy which ended his teachings in Bologna and Southern France. Each time he preaches, hundreds and even thousands will gather to listen. His writings were translated into many languages and have become some of the greatest literary works in the Catholic church. He later died on 12 June 1231 at the Poor Clare convent at Arcella on his way back to Padua.

Reason why St. Anthony is called finder of lost items;

Saint Anthony as we stated above is the patron of lost things, and he’s the saint we invoke to aid us in finding our lost times. The reason behind this belief is dated by to the story of himself and his novice.

Anthony had a favorite book of Psalms that was very valuable to him. As this was before the invention of printing, the book was a hand-printed book – but of even more value were his personal notes and the comments he had made in the Psalter to assist with teaching students in the Franciscan order. It was suspected that a novice leaving the community had stolen the Psalter. Anthony prayed for the return of his beloved possession. Shortly after, the novice returned the book and sought Anthony’s forgiveness, which was given.
